Hitotsubashi – IMF Executive Seminar on Monetary Policy Challenges held November 1-2
APPP and International Monetary Fund’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP) jointly hosted an Executive Seminar for senior policymakers from Asia, focusing on the policy challenges for monetary policy. The seminar considered the issues that have emerged in the wake of the global financial crisis, including crisis response, the reevaluation of inflation targeting framework, and the role of monetary policy in ensuring financial stability. Lectures and discussions were provided by senior staff of the IMF and the Bank of Japan, the Former Governor of the Bank of Thailand as well as the APPP faculty. A Discussion Session with the Governor of the Bank of Japan was also held.

The highly successful Seminar was attended by 14 overseas participants from 9 countries representing 12 institutions, including three Central Bank Deputy Governors, a Commissioner of Financial Services Commission and a President of Deposit Insurance Corporation. Senior officials from the Bank of Japan, the Japanese Ministry of Finance, and representatives from two foreign central bank representative offices in Tokyo also participated in the Seminar.

Details of the Seminar can be found at our ‘Seminars’ page in this website.
The IMF’s OAP website (http://www.imf.org/external/oap/index.htm) also has the details.

CLASS OF 2011 ENROLLS
On October 3, 13 students were admitted to APPP in the 2011 Matriculation Ceremony. The new intakes are from 7 countries, comprising 8 male and 5 female students, continuing APPP's diverse mix of students.

CLASS OF 2009 GRADUATES
On September 20, 14 Class of 2009 students were conferred the Master of Public Policy degree, successfully culminating their two years of study and research at APPP. The normal graduation dates of end-July had to be pushed back because of the disruptions in the academic calendar following the March 11 earthquake. This delay unfortunately meant that we were not able to hold a formal degree conferring ceremony where graduates receive the degree certificates in person, though we did have a wonderful farewell party at the end of July. We applaud the Class of 2011 for their hard work during in a most stressful environment.

The following awards were granted:
    • Placement on the Director's List for Outstanding Academic Achievement: (Saida), Muhammad Ridhwan Galela (Ridhwan) and Peter Lee Eng Boon (Peter).
    • Honorable Mention for Thesis: Saida Muhammedovna Ismailakhunova for her thesis, 'Flat Personal Income Tax in Kyrgyzstan: Effect on Labor Supply and Income Distribution'
    • Highest Improvement Award: Deepani Dilrukshi S.S. Mudiyanselage (Dilu)
    • Best Leadership Award: Ramakrishna Jamon Villnueva (Ish)
We wish the class of 2009 graduates all the success in their future endeavors.

NEW APPP COMMUNITY WEBSITE
We have moved the APPP Community Website (ACW) to a new service using Google Sites. Unlike the earlier ACW, the access to the site is not password protected and can be viewed by anyone. We hope that it provides a convenient way to keep up with alumni activities. We also hope to launch a members-only site in the near future. Meanwhile, if there are any alumni related news or announcements, please contact our Program Officer, so that we can post them on the ACW.
